Guitar - Information for beginners

The classical guitar

Classical guitars are acoustic guitars with nylon strings. These instruments are built for the tension of nylon strings, i. Steel strings do not belong to this type of guitar, because in the long or medium term damage to the instrument can be the result.

The neck of a classical guitar is wider than in all other types of 6-string guitar. The width at the saddle is often 50-53 mm. Also available are so-called "Small Neck" variants of 48mm nut width.

Children's guitars (¼, ½, ¾ or ⅞ sizes) are smaller versions of classical guitars - they are also used to string nylon strings.

Nylon strings are not labeled according to their thickness but according to their tension. The most common are strings with medium tension (medium tension), high tension (high tension) or low tension (low tension)

For children's guitars nylon strings are used for the corresponding sizes.

The term concert guitar also has nothing to do with whether a guitar has a pickup. Both classical guitars and western guitars may or may not have a pickup.

The acoustic guitar

Acoustic guitars with steel strings are built for the tension of steel strings. Nylon strings can not be mounted on these guitars, or make no sense on these instruments.

Compared to classical guitar, acoustic guitars have a much slimmer neck. One orientation is the concept of the saddle width - very often one finds a 42mm or 43mm nut width with western guitars. But it can rarely be up to 48mm.

Unlike the classical guitars, the different sizes of western guitars are not denoted as ¼, ½, or ¾ sizes, but are of different types and shapes of the body. Frequent forms from small to large are: Paralla guitars, 0, 00, 000 sizes, OM (Orchestra Model), Dreadnought, Grand Auditorium, Jumbo, and Superjumbo. There are also especially small travel guitars.

Western guitars can also be bought with or without a built-in pickup.

Steel strings for western guitars are available in different strengths. The thicknesses are referred to the thickness of the high e-string (the thinnest string of the set) in inches. Thus, a 10 string has a thickness of 0.010 inches, a 11 string of 0.011 inches, etc., i. So a set of 12 has a 0.012 inch thick high e-string.
